Invisalign FAQs
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions.
-
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a series of clear, custom-made aligners to straighten your teeth – no metal wires or brackets needed.
During your consultation, we’ll use advanced 3D imaging technology to map out a personalized treatment plan just for your smile.
From there, a set of custom aligners will be created to fit your teeth perfectly at every stage of the process.
-
How does the Invisalign process work?
Invisalign clear plastic aligners are designed to move your teeth in tiny increments as your treatment progresses. You will wear each aligner for a certain number of days before it is replaced by the next one in the series.
This process will continue until your teeth are in their desired positions. The duration of your Invisalign treatment will be determined by your dentist based on your specific needs.
-
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Since everyone's orthodontic needs are different, everyone's treatment plan and timeline will differ. At your initial consultation, your dentist will be able to give you a rough estimate of how long your treatment will take. The duration of your time with Invisalign will depend on a number of factors, including the misalignment of your teeth or jaw, the shape of your bite, and the amount of movement required to correct the problem.
-
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
The Invisalign aligners are made with USP Class VI medical-grade, high molecular weight polyurethane resins. They are BPA free.
-
How often do I have to visit the dentist?
Because Invisalign aligners don’t need any adjustments or tightening, you’ll simply switch to a new set as directed by your dentist. You’ll also have quick check-in appointments about every four to six weeks, depending on your needs.
During these visits, your dentist will check your progress, make sure your overall oral health is on track, answer any questions you have, and make any necessary tweaks to your treatment plan.
-
What are the primary features of Invisalign?
The features of Invisalign include:
- A discreet, low profile appearance
- Smooth construction for enhanced comfort
- Do not require adjustment appointments
- Removable for eating, brushing and flossing
-
How much does Invisalign cost?
The cost of Invisalign depends on how complex your case is and how long your treatment will take. Generally, the more severe the misalignment, the more aligners you’ll need—and the higher the cost.
In many cases, Invisalign pricing is similar to that of traditional braces.
-
How will Invisalign fit my lifestyle?
Invisalign is designed to fit easily into your daily routine.
You’ll simply remove your aligners whenever you eat, drink, brush, or floss—so there are no extra dietary restrictions, and you can keep up with your regular brushing and flossing without any trouble.
-
Are there any food or drink restrictions?
Since Invisalign aligners are removable, you can simply take them out when it’s time to eat. That means no extra dietary restrictions – you can keep enjoying all your favourite foods.
To keep your aligners clear and protect your teeth, we recommend taking them out anytime you drink anything other than plain water.
-
How many sets of aligners will I need?
The answer to this question will depend on the severity of your misalignment.
Your dentist can give you an accurate estimate of how many aligners you will need based on a careful evaluation of the positions of your teeth during an initial consultation.
-
Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes! Anyone who has healthy teeth and gums is a potential candidate for Invisalign.
More and more adults are deciding to undergo orthodontic treatment these days, in large because options like Invisalign have become available.
-
Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Yes! Teens can certainly be candidates for Invisalign. In fact, Invisalign has created a line of aligners to meet the unique needs of teenagers.
Invisalign Teen aligners have compliance indicators on them (small blue dots that fade away after the aligners have been worn enough) to help teens stay on track with their treatment.
They also come with eruption tabs that provide space for second molars and help prevent them from growing in crooked.
-
How often do I have to change my Invisalign aligners?
Most patients change to their next set of aligners every two weeks or so, but every treatment plan is different. Your dentist will tell you how often you need to switch to your next set of aligners.
-
How do I clean my aligners?
Rinse your aligners every time you take them out to help remove dry saliva and plaque, which can lead to tooth decay and bad breath.
You can also soak your aligners as needed using denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, or Invisalign cleaning crystals to keep them fresh and clean.
Before putting your aligners back in, be sure to brush and floss your teeth. Good oral hygiene is essential for keeping your teeth healthy and avoiding cavities. Skipping this step can trap food and bacteria between your teeth and the aligners, increasing your risk of dental problems and bad breath.
A simple and affordable way to keep your aligners clear, fresh, and free of harmful bacteria is to clean them with a clear, antibacterial soap.
Brush your aligners gently to avoid scratching them, rinse off the soap, and you’re good to go!
-
Can I play sports with Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are removable, so you can play sports without worrying about damaging your aligners.
However, remember that Invisalign aligners must be kept in for at least 22 hours a day, so plan your time carefully.
It is also recommended that you invest in a sports mouth guard to protect your teeth, as orthodontic treatment can cause them to loosen slightly as they shift into their new positions, making them more susceptible to damage.
-
Can I play my instrument with Invisalign?
Yes! Simply remove your aligners if that is required to play your instrument, and pop them back in when you're done.
-
How do I store my aligners?
Your Invisalign aligners will come with a case, and this is where you should put your aligners whenever you take them out to help keep them safe. Since the aligners are made of plastic, you should avoid leaving them in hot areas as they could deform/melt.
